Depth orientation

Colwell integrates Jungian psychoanalytic training from the Jung Institute Zurich with her art therapy practice, specializing in dream pattern analysis and shadow work to access unconscious material through creative expression.

Maggi Colwell, MS, ATR-BC, is an art therapist and Jungian analyst in training and depth-work practitioner based in Columbus, Ohio, whose path to this work is inseparable from the life she has lived inside it. She was navigating non-binary identity in the 1980s, long before language existed for it, and has spent twelve years in ritual training — experiences that gave her not just an intellectual relationship to the margins of human experience but a embodied one. That biography matters clinically. It means she arrived at Jung's ideas about the unconscious, symbol, and initiation not as a scholar discovering a framework but as someone recognizing terrain she already knew.

What distinguishes Colwell's work in the room is a sustained attention to the body as a first language. She notices the pit in the stomach, the tension held in the shoulders, the tightening in the throat — and rather than moving past these signals, she invites them to speak. Through color, line, movement, and breath, she helps her analysands develop what she calls "a conscious relationship with their symptoms," understanding them not as enemies to be subdued but as carriers of unconscious content, symbols that haven't yet found words. The shift can arrive all at once — in an exhale in front of a piece of art, in tears, in a sudden relaxing — or it can accumulate gradually, one body signal recognized and received at a time. Either way, she is willing to wait.

Colwell works primarily with middle-aged and older women carrying childhood trauma or chronic stress-related illness, and she sees clients both in person and online. She also draws a different cohort through her depth-work coaching practice: astrologers, spiritual seekers, intellectuals, people in long-term integration after psychedelic experiences, and those who sense they are somewhere in an initiatory passage and need a guide who won't flinch. She does not take insurance, and she is direct about what to expect: this work is slow, the ego resists it, and she is not looking to solely quiet the anxiety. She is looking for what the anxiety is pointing toward — the transformation that lives underneath.
